1973-1976 were hard on America

"From 1973-1976 America suffered more wounds to its' ideal of itself than at just about any other time in its' history. Criminal president, oil shock, inflation, military defeat, etc..."

Apparently from Rick Perlstein

That was exactly when I formed a substantial piece of my identity as an American. Couple it with my mom getting divorced, and having a new boyfriend, and starting to spend time at Ed Burke's house, and my ongoing reading, lots of polyannish science fiction-we call that 'solutionist' now - the idea that we have solutions.

And I still (don't tell anyone) believe in solutions. But still there are those wounds to our ideal of self.

Goodness! Stumbling on this today. Where (throws up hands) everything! But now it doesn't seem like we are suffering wounds to our ideal of ourself as a nation. We are suffering the wounds of having some pretty disparate ideas of what our ideals are and should be.
